Patty Hill
About the Artist:
Originally from Rochester, NY area: the artist takes her inspiration from living in Utah and exploring the western wilderness. Camping at Arches, Canyon Lands, and Bryce; river rafting; and exploring the west at every opportunity deepened her appreciation for the beauty of nature and the earth's formation, which is reflected in her current work. Her life long interest in art began as a youth with summer art classes at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery. As a graduate of Syracuse University majoring in Art Illustration, her career began as a designer of packaging and displays for a puzzle and game company and working as a freelance artist in advertising. She and her family lived in Salt Lake City for 13 years, where she worked for Xerox while continuing to paint.
Artist's work - "Emerging Earth" series are fanciful images of how the earth's elements may have formed and flowed during the beginning stages of the earth's creation. Patty highlights this series with metallic colors; combining acrylic, enamel, and oil paints. Several much larger works in this series will be available in September/October after the initial viewing of these works at her solo art show in the Catskill Mountains.
Previous series include paintings on large glass plates and pastel works depicting Yellowstone Park. Her current style is boldly expressive and abstract, painting wet on wet, brushing, dripping, tilting the canvas to move the paint, and attempting controlled splattering. She describes her work as having "deliberate spontaneity," as she plans several steps ahead. The finishing touches include working in some areas to increase the saturation of color with attention to contrast, brushing in details, and enhancing the metallic glow in some areas.
Her art inspiration comes from living an outdoor life, and from years of admiring work from "The Group of Seven," a group of Canadian painters, formed in 1920, who painted the rugged Canadian landscapes with a strong purpose of depicting the beauty of the land, each with differing, stunningly bold styles.
